The Work of the Holy Spirit
Yesterday, I went to the library to check out a concordance. I had never heard of such a thing before. My friend at work, Robert, is a Sunday school teacher and he was the first person to tell me about them because I would always come to him with questions about Scripture. Concordances are really nice because they allow you to find the passage that has come to mind with only knowing the main idea or topic. For example, I was trying to remember a passage about the Spirit of truth and I kept thinking it might have come from dealing with the key word of "persecution." So, I looked it up in my trusty, new (well borrowed) concordance and there were several listings concerning the topic of persecution, so I had to pick one to try out. I picked John 16:33 (John because I'm still in love with a man named John and 33 because I'm 33...and they say that Jesus was 33 at the time of His crucifixion) So, to John 16:33 I went, and on that page the first heading was "The Work of the Holy Spirit," which had the bit I was looking about concerning the Spirit of Truth.
The Work of the Holy Spirit (John 16:5)
Now I am going to him who sent me, yet none of you asks me, "Where are you going?" Because I have said these things you are filled with grief. But I tell you the truth; It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgement: in regard to sin, because men do not believe in me; in regard to righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; and in regard to judgement, because the prince of this world stands condemned.
I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak only what he hears and will tell you what is yet to come. He will bring glory to me by taking from you what is mine and making it known to you.
And here's the passage at John 16:33.
"In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."
